After Australia were bowled out for 233, the next 2 days would see India pile on the runs against the likes of Shane Warne with relative ease.
Who would prove to be Australia’s nemesis? Six men – VVS Laxman, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly all got good scores and the Aussies had to sweat it out at Eden Gardens for a long time.
An opening stand of 191 set the tone for India. Sidhu (97) and Laxman (95) gave the great start before Dravid (86) and Sachin (79) continued the good work. But the main assault came from Azharuddin (163*) with Ganguly (65) in a supporting role.
India would make 633/5 and win inside 4 days by an innings and 219 runs. The victory helped them clinch the series.
Australia will not want to recall this game, a match where they could not even dominate one session of play.
