When and why should not sighting the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi 2023?
People must avoid Moon sighting a day before Ganesha Chaturthi. Thus, to avoid the Moon sighting, from 09:45 AM to 08:44 PM. Now the question comes to your mind why should avoid Moon sighting on Ganesh Chaturthi? It is believed that if doing so then it creates Mithya Dosham or Mithya Kalank (False accusation of stealing something).
According to legends, once Lord Krishna sighted the moon on the day of Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi, and because of that he has been cursed with Mithya Dosha because later he was wrongly accused of stealing a precious jewel named Syamantaka.
Sage Narada went on to inform Lord Krishna that God Chandra had received a curse from Lord Ganesha. This curse decreed that individuals who caught sight of the moon on Shukla Chaturthi during the month of Bhadrapada would suffer from the Mithya Dosha curse, leading to social stigma and dishonor. Acting upon Sage Narada’s counsel, Lord Krishna observed the fasting ritual of Ganesha Chaturthi as a means to dispel the Mithya Dosha affliction.
First celebrated at the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
According to legend, the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi was first held at the time of the Maratha ruler, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, so as to fight against the Mughals and encourage sentiments of nationalism. This tradition of Ganesh Chaturthi was revived in 1893, by Bal Gangadhar Tilak to unite people against the Britishers.
Why Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated for 10 days
Bal Gangadhar Tilak a prominent Indian leader, changed the idea of celebrating the festival from a private one to a grand one to unite Hindus and promote the cause of independence from British rule, so he held a public meeting in Pune wherein he decided that from Bhadrapad Shukla Chaturthi till Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturdashi (Anant Chaturdashi), Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated to awaken a feeling of togetherness amongst Indians and to help get freedom from British rule.
He also believed that the 10-day festival would provide a common platform for Hindus from all walks of life to come together and celebrate their shared culture.
After that, Ganeshotsav was celebrated all across the country with great fanfare, but it’s especially popular in Maharashtra.
From Maharashtra, the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi gradually spread across the country. The famous Lalbaugcha Raja Ganesh idol is the pride of Mumbai’s Lalbaug during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
