When Kapil Dev Played The Innings Of His Life To Save India From World Cup Elimination

June 18, 1983. The date remains etched in the memory of the Indian cricket fan. It was a day Kapil Dev launched a fierce counterattack to destroy the hopes of the Zimbabweans.

At 17/5, India were reeling with no sense of direction. That was when Kapil took charge. Opting for attack as the best defence, he went for his shots and soon saw the field become less aggressive.

He showed no sign of letting up as Zimbabwe desperately searched for a way to get him out. No, it was not to be, the runs only came quicker.

By the time the damage was over, India made 266/8 with 175 of those runs belonging to Kapil Dev. It was at that time the highest ODI individual score.

His knock came in 138 balls with 16 fours and 6 sixes. However, due to a BBC strike, there was no video coverage of one of the best ODI innings to have been played.

Even now, over 39 years later, fans remember how the skipper guided his team out of dangerous waters. After all, if they lost they would have been knocked out of the World Cup and never gone on to win it a week later. But that is a tale for later.
