When Sourav Ganguly Almost Scored A 200 And 100 In The Same Test

In Test career spanning over a decade, Sourav Ganguly had never managed to score a double century. That is not until 2007.

Well, it all changed in the Bengaluru Test against Pakistan.

Walking in at 44/2 he soon saw his side reeling at 61/4. With partnerships of 300 with Yuvraj Singh (162) and 178 with Irfan Pathan (102), Ganguly set about repairing the damage.

He was brutal and full of grace at the same time as the Pakistanis could not set a fixed field. Boundaries found the gaps with ease and the runs continued to flow.

Mind you, the man was in the twilight of his career, but he looked in the prime of life as he moved towards a milestone.

Then came the moment, am maiden Test double hundred. He would never again even come close.

His 239 helped India amass 626. The match was drawn and the series went to the hosts. Ganguly’s knock lasted 361 balls and 30 fours and 2 sixes.

He would retire from the game a year later after a successful series against the Aussies. But even then on the verge of ending his career, Ganguly was still a force to reckon with when he wielded the willow.

He was not done in the match though. The man made 91 in the second innings and narrowly missed out on joining a select band of players with a century and a double century in the same Test.

Only one Indian has achieved that feat till now and that is Sunil Gavaskar vs West Indies in 1971 when he made 124 and 220. Rahul Dravid came close in 1999 vs New Zealand when he made 190 and 103 not out.

That game however belonged to Ganguly. Even at 35, in the twilight of his career, he was a nightmare for the bowlers.
