When Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs Explained Why He Never Wore A Watch

Science genius Albert Einstein never wore socks, and American business magnate Henry Ford (the founder of Ford Motor Company) had a peculiar diet of weed sandwiches. Similarly, Apple’s co-founder and former CEO, Steve Jobs, had a unique characteristic that many are unaware of.

Steve Jobs had decided to never wear a wristwatch.

Lisa Brennan-Jobs, Steve Jobs’ daughter, recounted his aversion to wristwatches in her memoir, “Small Fry.” A candid conversation with her father during her fourth-grade years sparked her curiosity about his wristwear absence.

“Why don’t you wear a watch?” young Lisa asked her father. “Fancy men wore watches.” Steve Jobs’ reply was characteristically profound, revealing his unique perspective on time and life. “I don’t want to be bound by time,” he explained, as per the ET report.

This choice came at a time when Lisa’s mother, Chrisann Brennan, was pursuing a degree at the California College of Arts and Crafts, and Steve Jobs undertook to look after their daughter.

What His Decision To Not Wear A Watch Meant

Steve Jobs’ decision not to wear a watch was a reflection of his desire to live in the present, unburdened by the relentless march of time. For him, wearing a watch would be a constant reminder of the ever-passing seconds, minutes, and hours—a reminder of life’s fleeting nature.

In a paradoxical twist, Jobs, a pioneer in enhancing productivity through technology, chose to avoid wristwatches as a deeply philosophical stance. His rejection of being “bound by time” was a testament to his dedication to freedom, creativity, and transcending the constraints of the clock.

When Did Steve Jobs Die?

Steve Jobs died on October 5, 2011, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

When he died, his sister Mona spoke about his last words as part of her eulogy. She mentioned that Steve Jobs looked at his sister Patty, children and partner Laurene, and spoke his final words- ‘Oh wow, Oh wow, Oh wow’, which were monosyllables, repeated three times.

Moreover, not many people are aware of the fact that Steve Jobs was adopted and made occasional attempts to track his biological parents in his teenage years. But later, when he stepped up his efforts during his tenure at Apple, he was able to find out that the famous author Mona Simpson was his biological sister, whom he tracked down later in life. But for privacy reasons, Jobs did not discuss his biological parents or how he ultimately tracked down his sister Mona.

On his death anniversary, October 5th, Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted in remembrance of the Apple co-founder, saying, “Thinking back on a pioneer who challenged conventions, a visionary who changed the world, a mentor, and a friend. We miss you, Steve.”
