Two men from France have set a new Guinness World Record for the world’s tallest rideable bicycle. Nicolas Barrioz and David Peyrou achieved this feat with their bicycle, nicknamed “Starbike.” The record-breaking bicycle stands at a height of 7.77 meters (25 ft 5 in), surpassing the previous record by 36 cm (1 ft 2 in).
Features of Starbike
Starbike, while similar to a regular bicycle with a saddle, two standard-sized wheels, and a handlebar connected to two brake levers, features a gigantic frame with pedals connected to the rear wheel by a 16-meter (53-ft) chain. “It also has a bell, in case other road users have not seen you,” Nicolas told Guinness World Records.

Made from recycled materials
The bicycle is made from alloy, steel, and wood, mostly sourced from recycled furniture. The tires were provided free of charge by Michelin, whose headquarters are in Clermont-Ferrand, the city where David and Nicolas unveiled their record-breaking bike at an annual bicycle festival.
Riding with a safety harness
To prove its functionality and officially earn the record, David rode the bicycle unassisted over a 100-meter distance. As a safety precaution, he wore a harness attached to a zip wire, which did not aid the bicycle’s balance in any way.

Started in a pub
The idea for the bicycle was conceived by the two friends while drinking in a pub about five years ago. They spent around three months designing the bike and sourcing materials, followed by nearly two years building it. Reflecting on the hundreds of hours spent in the workshop, Nicolas said, “It is not possible to tell you the blood, sweat, and tears.”

“This experience has completely transformed my worldview. Before this, I really needed self-confidence; I was shy and had a negative self-opinion. Now it’s better, and sometimes I feel unstoppable; I think I can repair, build, or design anything,” he added.
