The architect of Friday night’s opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics said that he took up the humungous task because his father “was a mad Olympics fan.””When I took this job, I took it for lots of reasons. I live locally and I thought I had the confidence and the status to carry a job like this,” the Guardian quoted him as saying.”But I also took it because my dad was a mad Olympics fan. He was seriously lunatic, sitting up all night watching grainy footage from Mexico. He introduced me to the Olympics,” he said.Boyle’s father died 18 months ago when the project was still in the planning stages, and he said that Friday would have been his birthday. The ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ director said that the fact he was not expected to compete with the scale of Beijing’s opening ceremony had liberated his team and helped them put such a sporting spectacle.ANI
