From A Potentially Fatal Engagement To A Popular Sport – The Evolution Of Fencing

Men going at each other with pointy swords never had a pretty outcome in the olden days. But fast forward to modern times and the sport is one of competition and not fatality.

Yes, fencing has evolved over the years. Once used to settle duels and old scores, now it’s a popular sport on the big stage.

The sport continues to evolve

Victory is based on points and a lethal strike is usually considered victory. Basically the move would have killed someone when it was still a fighting style.

It is believed to have originated in Spain in the mid 15th century. It was however more popular in France as made famous by classics like The Three Musketeers.

The shift towards fencing as a sport rather than as military training happened from the mid-18th century, and was led by Domenico Angelo, who established a fencing academy, Angelo’s School of Arms, in Carlisle House, Soho, London in 1763. Over time it developed into healthy competition than one with a potentially deadly outcome.

The participants wear protective masks and a uniform to withstand pressure from the point. After all the swords are not fake though non-lethal.

The grip depends on the individual’s choice and varies from player to player. Fencing has been part of the Olympics since 1896 and is still fun to watch. It is still evolving and more variations are coming out. Thankfully no lives are being lost this time.
