'Leander pulls out of Olympics'

NEW DELHI: According to some TV reports, Leander Paes has decided to withdraw from the London Olympics after All Indian Tennis Association has paired him with lower ranked Vishnu Vardhan.

Earlier in the day, AITA announced that they will send two teams for London. Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna got their way and will be the second Indian doubles team to compete at the London Games.Paes had served a threat on Wednesday, saying that he would pull out if asked to pair with a junior player.Last week, the AITA announced that Bhupathi would partner Paes at the Games. But both Bhupathi and Bopanna, who qualify for the Olympics as a team, refused to pair with the Atlanta Games bronze medallist.Leander’s father and Olympian Vece Paes has also slammed AITA’s decision to pair his son with World No. 328 Vardhan at the mega-event, saying the move was unfair on the country’s highest-ranked player.AITA announced on Thursday that they will send two teams for London.
