Sourav Ganguly blames Dhoni, Srikkanth

HYDERABAD: VVS Laxman on Saturday sprang a surprise by announcing that he was quitting cricket. “I would like to announce my retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. It’s been 16 years since I have made my international debut for India and I feel it’s the right time to move on.”There were hints from sources that he was unsettled by recent articles in the media by some former players. However, former captain Sourav Ganguly blamed captain MS Dhoni and chairman of selectors, K Srikkanth (Chika) for Laxman’s sudden departure.”Srikkanth has a big problem in communicating. A player like Laxman would not train so hard just to keep himself fit for two Tests. If they (selectors) conveyed their opinion to Laxman earlier, this situation would not have surfaced,” Ganguly said.Ganguly was also surprised to find Laxman state at the press conference that the latter “found it difficult to reach Dhoni”.”I have always kept the country’s success and needs ahead of my personal aspirations and hence while I would have loved to be contributing to the team’s success against England and Australia later in the season, I think it’s the right time to give an opportunity to groom a youngster in home conditions before the tough tours overseas next year,” Laxman, who has played 134 Tests for the country, said.Laxman said it was a really tough decision to make, but in the end he had to give in to his ‘inner voice’. He also remembered his teammates “with whom I played and shared the best moments of my life. I was very fortunate to play with colleagues who took a lot of pride in theirs and the team’s performance. The affection, bonding and friendship they shared with me will be cherished by me for all my life.”
