Facebook has in a very short time become everyone’s go-to place on the interweb. The social media platform has become the perfect place for people to voice their opinions/concerns, get to know people, socialise, share information, memories or just waste time, if nothing else. Thanks to its popularity, however, it has also become a popular playground for trollers, spammers, hackers and other cyber criminals to take unsuspecting netizens for a ride.

Beware of the notifications!
There is a new virus ‘in the market’ that has been speaking to people using Facebook on Google Chrome. The virus apparently disguises itself as an innocuous notification. The user apparently gets a notification that he/she has been tagged or mentioned by one of their friends. Once the user makes the mistake of clicking on the notification, the malware gets downloaded to the computer.

Experts say that the malware disguises itself as a Google Chrome extension which is tricking the users into clicking on the file once downloaded, and that is the biggest mistake. Clicking on the file can download a host of viruses on the laptop.
It is not yet known if the malware only targets Google Chrome or if there are other browsers like Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera that are experiencing similar problems. The issue has only been reported on Chrome. For now, everyone using Facebook is advised to be extra cautious before they end up clicking on something they’ll regret later.
Safe.
