WhatsApp Backup On Google Drive May Not Be Unlimited, Part Of 15GB Quota

WhatsApp backups on Google Drive could soon be counted against your GDrive storage quota and won’t receive unlimited storage space, according to a report by WABetaInfo.

Some strings have surfaced in the code of the popular messaging platform that suggests that the current unlimited storage space for WhatsApp data might not last for long.

WABetaInfo has come across a screenshot that shows notifications informing users that they are reaching the end of their storage quota.

These notifications are expected to surface during the backing up of a user’s chat. Along with this, WABetaInfo also reports that users could be offered an option to exclude certain file types — like video or audio files — from being backed up, to maintain storage space on the cloud for more important things such as images or messages.

The report reveals that Google could offer a certain quota for backing up WhatsApp files — it could either be included in the already existing 15GB quota or it could be over and above the existing 15GB quota.

In case you didn’t know, iPhone users backing up their data on the iCloud are bound by the 5GB iCloud storage quota.

While it would truly suck for Google to stop offering the free storage for WhatsApp chat backups, a move like that can be expected from Google as it did the same with Google Photos when it stopped offering free high-quality uploads to Google Photos last year.
