Just after the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, when people wanted to shoot off a flurry of Happy New Year messages over Whatsapp, the popular messaging app stopped working completely.

Not a great start to the year for Whatsapp, is it now? Oh well!
“WhatsApp users around the world experienced a brief outage today that has now been resolved”, a WhatsApp spokeswoman said in an emailed statement about the global outage on New Year’s Eve.
The fact was confirmed on Down Detector — an online tracker which lets you know if a service is working or not — when between 11 pm on Dec 31 and 2 am on January 1, there’s a visible red tower in the graph, suggesting Whatsapp’s inactivity during that time.
According to the website, 44% of Whatsapp users couldn’t send or receive messages, while 44% just couldn’t even connect to Whatsapp.
Needless to say, it was a bumpy start for Whatsapp’s billion plus users worldwide — more than 200 million of which reside in India.
Here’s wishing a healthy rest of the year for Whatsapp.
