Apli Aaji: 70-Year-Old Grandma's Traditional Maharashtrian Recipes Are A Hit Online

Suman Dhamne, a 70-year-old grandmother from rural
Maharashtra, has won the hearts of social media users with her recipes.

“I did not know what YouTube was and never thought about
putting recipes on social media. But now I feel uneasy if I do not share any
recipe on the channel,” says Suman Dhamne told Better India.

Suman makes Maharashtrian dishes with homemade spices, all
in traditional flavours. Impressed by her culinary skills, the channel has over
4,000 subscribing and millions of views each day.

In January, her grandson Yash Pathak — the brain behind the
channel and Dhamane’s cameraperson, video editor and uploader — requested her
to make pav bhaji and her journey to YouTube stardom started thereon.

“I don’t know what she changed from the recipe videos, but the food was loved in the family. That is when the idea struck me to come up with a channel,” Yash told The Better India.

Finally, in March, they started the channel with the recipe of bitter gourd. “It started getting viewers. Eventually, we uploaded recipes of groundnut chutney, green vegetables, Maharashtrian sweet dishes, eggplant and other traditional food recipes,” Yash said.

However, the journey wasn’t a cakewalk for Dhamne. She was excited about her grandson’s idea but was conscious of facing the camera.

“I was very excited about the idea when Yash proposed the idea to me. But I never faced a video camera in my life and used to get very uncomfortable initially. I used to be very conscious about my looks, the movements and if everything is going as planned,” she said.

“I decided to try, and now I have become famous. I was very happy when I got appreciation – even a YouTube creators award. I feel very proud and enjoy the appreciation from family and relatives,” Dhamne added.

While learning the technical aspects of video editing, Yash helped his grandmother learn English words like baking powder and sauce.

The biggest challenge was when their channel got hacked on October 17 and hackers ran a bitcoin live stream on the link. Some of the videos of the channel disappeared. They were relieved when the channel was restored in around four days.

Dhamane has uploaded nearly 150 recipe videos of traditional Maharashtrian fare on her channel. She uses homemade spices for her recipes that are quite easy to make and follow despite the language barrier,
