Weird WhatsApp Exchange Between Boss And Subordinate About ‘Hey’ Being ‘Unprofessional'

We all at some point in our lives have had bosses who are unreasonable beyond a limit. They talk about things that are completely irrational and sometimes demand respect and don’t really earn it. However, when someone asks for the respect that is when all of it is lost.

Boss says ‘hey’ is an unprofessional greeting

That is what happened to a worker who shared a WhatsApp conversation between him and his superior. In the said unusual conversation, the irrational boss apparently got offended when the guy he was talking to (identified as Shreyas) greeted him with a “hey”.

When Shreyas greeted the superior with ‘hey,’ the superior got offended and said that the said greeting is ‘unprofessional’. It seemed like there either may be a language barrier or that there was an ego issue.

“Hi Shreyas, my name is Sandeep,” the boss says after texting to ask a question. “Please don’t [use] the word ‘hey.’ It’s offensive for me. If you can’t remember my name, simply use ‘Hi.’”

The superior gave no proper explanation as to why ‘hi’ was better considering both are semi-professional greetings and are almost identical terms in the English language. He also made it known that he considers the terms “dude” and “man” to be unprofessional, and had something to say about terms like “chap” and “chick,” though it’s not clear if those are supposed to be acceptable or if they’re also offensive to him.

The conversation took place over WhatsApp

Shreyas even pointed out that since the conversation is WhatsApp and that alone signifies a non-formal way of talking, the superior’s reply was even more bizarre. “Well, considering that we are having a conversation over WhatsApp and not over LinkedIn or a mail chain,” they wrote back. “I’m just being casual as you are texting me on my personal number. And coming to being professional I’m not the one being offended.”

“Whatsapp [sic] is not personal space anymore, it has been used for business,” the boss claimed. “I am not insisting my ideology on you. If you understand it, fine; or you will understand it sooner or later.”

People on Reddit couldn’t believe this conversation as well and thought the boss was kind of pushing it. However, the comments section had to be locked since people started becoming racist against Indians.

However, a superior telling an employee that they’re required not to say “hey” to them, and restricting another language that he personally considers to be unprofessional, certainly sounds like pushing his ideology onto someone else.
