Canada Express Entry System: Know How You Can Improve Your CRS Score

If you are planning to apply for permanent residency (PR) in Canada through Express Entry,  your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score might well decide your fate.

Express entry is an online system used to process applications for skilled workers who wish to immigrate to Canada. Candidates with the highest rankings are invited to apply for permanent residency.

What is CRS?

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based system used by the Government of Canada to determine your eligibility for the Express Entry immigration program.

As per the rules, the higher the CRS scorers, the better chance you have of receiving an invitation to apply (ITA).

When you create an Express Entry profile, you’re allotted points for various factors based on the information you provide.

Here’s how you can improve your CRS:

Apply Early

Age is one of the significant factors in the system. If you apply while you are between the ages of 20 and 29, you will automatically receive 110 CRS points. The points start to decrease if you are 30 or above.

If you apply early, you gain a crucial advantage in the whole process.

Language proficiency

Language tests are high point earners. You could see a significant rise in your CRS points with higher language scores. Candidates are evaluated based on four abilities: reading, speaking, listening, and writing.

Each ability is given a separate Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB). You need a CLB 4 to start gaining points, and there is a huge jump depending on the level you achieve, with levels between CLB 6 and CLB 9 earning you healthy points.

French proficiency

French is the second most spoken language in Canada. Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, and many other provinces have a significant French-speaking population.

If you can add French proficiency, you can get up to 6 points for each ability in a second language.

Work experience

If you have under 3 years of work experience outside Canada, wait until you get to your 3-year work anniversary. You will receive additional points under the skill transferability point section.

Education

Under this factor, you receive points for the highest degree, diploma, or certificate you’ve earned in Canada or another country. The maximum possible score for educational qualifications is 150 (140 if you’re applying jointly with a spouse or partner) for applicants with a doctoral or Ph.D. degree.

If you studied outside Canada, you need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to verify that your foreign credential is valid and equivalent to a Canadian one.
