Mercedes' Next-Gen S-Class Luxury Car Will Be Able To Drive Itself… Partially

Mercedes-Benz is aiming for a Level-3 autonomy in its next generation luxury sedan, the refreshed S-Class, due to be launched in 2020. As per a recent Automotive News interview, the company’s head of research hinted at the step-up technology that will allow the vehicle to self-drive without any human input whatsoever. That, however, does not eliminate the need of a human driver, who should be alert to take over in case of any emergency.

The new level of autonomy in the upcoming Mercedes S-Class will fall in line with what Audi is planning for its 2019 A8. Audi’s ‘Traffic Jam Pilot’ will allow the driver to take a break as the car will be able to drive on its own certain situations. With both the companies gunning for the next level of autonomous capability for their vehicles, it will surely be interesting to see how well they are able to incorporate the idea.

The automakers are proceeding with caution though. They have made it clear time and again that the autonomous system is not supposed to replace a driver under any circumstance. Building on the level of autonomy might just have the undesired effect though, as the drivers are prone to getting distracted or not pay enough attention with the car driving itself.

Notably, Tesla also amplified the autonomous ability of its cars through a recent software update, which now lets the Tesla vehicles switch lanes automatically even at “Mad Max” speed mode. Check out how the system works here.
