Ford EVs Set To Use Tesla's Charging Plug From Next Year

Ford CEO Jim Farley and Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers will be compatible with Ford automobiles by early 2024. Here’s how it will happen.

Ford Evs will use Tesla’s supercharging plug

Farley stated that future Ford vehicles will be fitted with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, which is Tesla’s standardised version of their proprietary charging method.

“We don’t want Tesla superchargers to be a walled garden,” Elon Musk remarked during a Twitter Space call. According to Musk, Tesla wants Ford and other automakers to have equal access to reliable EV charging stations.

According to Ford, Tesla will create an adaptor that will be given to consumers who purchase any of Ford’s electric vehicles, including the F-150 Lightning truck, Mustang Mach-E, and E-Transit delivery van.

Ford’s EVs, like the great majority of EVs in North America, are compatible with EV chargers that use CCS (Combined Charging System) plugs.

The adapter will allow Ford EVs to connect to Tesla Superchargers, including the newly released Version 3 chargers.

Ford’s next-generation EV platform comes out in 2025

In addition, Ford‘s next-generation EV platform, due in 2025, will be compatible with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard connection. Tesla said last year that it will make its charging standard available to other automakers, and Ford is now one of the first to do so.

Tesla Superchargers in the United States employ a proprietary connector — this was Tesla’s “competitive moat,” or barrier to competition from other automakers.

To allow non-Tesla vehicles to use the chargers, the business installed a gadget called the “Magic Dock,” which uses a CCS adapter on the connector. CCS is the widely accepted standard for DC fast charging that most EV manufacturers in North America have implemented.
