Bastille Day or French National Day – July 14

Bastille Day is celebrated on 14 July every year. This day marks the anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789 which is a turning point of the French Revolution.

1942 – Quit India Resolution passed by Congress

The Congress Working Committee meeting at Wardha, which was held on 14 July 1942, passed the Quit India Resolution demanding complete independence from the British government. The draft proposed massive civil disobedience if the British did not accede to the demands.

1789 – French revolutionaries storm the Bastille

One of the revolutionary days in Paris and now a national holiday, the 14th of July (“Bastille Day”) is celebrated with a mixture of solemn military parades and easygoing dancing and fireworks. The storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, has been commemorated in France for more than a century.

1798 – Sedition Act becomes federal law

On this day in 1798, the enactment of the Sedition Act made it a crime to publish “false, scandalous and malicious writing” against the government or its officials. It carried an expiration date of March 3, 1801, the day before John Adams’s presidential term ended. 

1965 – Mars flyby of Mariner 4

After an eight-month voyage to Mars, Mariner 4 makes the first flyby of the red planet, becoming the first spacecraft to take close-up photographs of another planet. The images show lunar-type impact craters, some of them touched with frost in the chill Martian evening.

1968 – Hank Aaron hits 500th homer

On July 14, 1968, Atlanta Braves slugger Henry “Hank” Aaron hits the 500th home run of his career in a 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants.

2015 – NASA’s New Horizons became the first spacecraft to visit Pluto

NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft was the first spacecraft to explore Pluto up close, flying by the dwarf planet and its moons on July 14, 2015. In early 2019, New Horizons flew past its second major science target – Arrokoth (2014 MU69), the most distant object ever explored up close.

– In 1912, American folk singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie (”This Land Is Your Land”) was born in Okemah, Okla.

– In 1921, Italian-born anarchists Nicola Sacco (SAK’-oh) and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were convicted in Dedham, Massachusetts, of murdering a shoe company paymaster and his guard. (Sacco and Vanzetti were executed six years later.)

– In 1933, all German political parties, except the Nazi Party, were outlawed.

– In 1966, the city of Chicago awoke to the shocking news that eight student nurses had been brutally slain during the night in a South Side dormitory. Drifter Richard Speck was convicted of the mass killing and condemned to death, but had his sentence reduced to life in prison, where he died in 1991.

– In 1976, Jimmy Carter won the Democratic presidential nomination at the party’s convention in New York.

– In 2004, the Senate scuttled a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. (Forty-eight senators voted to advance the measure _ 12 short of the 60 needed _ and 50 voted to block it).

– In 2013, thousands of demonstrators across the country protested a Florida jury’s decision the day before to clear George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

– In 2016, terror struck Bastille Day celebrations in the French Riviera city of Nice (nees) as a large truck plowed into a festive crowd, killing 86 people in an attack claimed by Islamic State extremists; the driver was shot dead by police.
