Priyanka Chopra Says Opportunities In Bollywood Should Only Rely On Merit Not Camps

Priyanka Chopra Jonas made headlines last month when she discussed her decision to leave Bollywood, citing “dirty politics” as a reason for pursuing a career in Hollywood.

In a recent interview, the global star elaborated on her efforts to eliminate politics and drama from the Hindi film industry and create a positive work environment for aspiring outsiders.

Priyanka acknowledged that the industry had undergone significant changes in the last 5-10 years, with new talents emerging from outside the industry.

She emphasized the need for open conversations about opportunities and workplace culture, advocating for merit-based casting decisions rather than favoring industry “camps.”

Her remarks underscore the increasing push towards inclusivity and equity in the film industry, with industry leaders working to foster more supportive and inclusive environments for all actors and creatives.

Speaking to Indian Express, PC said, “Now that we live in a world of streaming, there is so much more. The Hindi film industry has changed so much in the last five to ten years. You have many talents – writers, directors, and actors from outside the industry. When I first started, that was not the case,”

Priyanka emphasized that casting decisions should also consider audience preferences and expressed her excitement to see fresh faces from outside the industry.

She advocated for merit-based casting decisions and the importance of conversations around this topic rather than relying on “politics and drama.”

Priyanka highlighted the need to eliminate industry “camps” that can influence casting decisions and celebrated the success of outsiders in mainstream Hindi entertainment.

“I think having those conversations is really, really important so that there are no camps that actually rule casting, and it is done because of merit and because of audiences wanting to watch people. I am so excited to be able to see so many new faces from outside (of the film industry) and different parts of the country who have come into mainstream Hindi language entertainment. It gives me such joy to be able to see that in my own career. And that happened because my generation of actors fought for it,” Priyanka added.

During an appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard a few weeks ago, Priyanka Chopra discussed her decision to pursue work in the US.

She explained feeling backed into a corner in Bollywood and seeking a way out.“I had people not casting me, I had beef with people, I am not good at playing that game, so I kind of was tired of the politics, and I said I needed a break,” said Priyanka.

Priyanka credited her generation of actors for fighting for change, which has resulted in a significant shift in the functioning of the Hindi film industry.
