Cameron’s Old Interviews On ‘Deep Sea Exploration’ Resurface After Missing Titanic Submersible

A submersible carrying five passengers went missing a few days ago – the underwater adventure, operated by private firm OceanGate, was taking four others and the company’s CEO to the Titanic wreckage. However, it failed to send 15-minute pings to a ship on the surface in less than two hours of its dive. Now, a search and rescue mission for the same is being carried out.

During this tense time, past comments by director James Cameron, who also directed Titanic, have resurfaced.

In a 2012 interview with The New York Times, Cameron, who is an experienced deep-sea explorer, had said that the deep sea is “one of the most unforgivable places on earth.”

Cameron has also travelled to the Mariana Trench, the deepest oceanic trench in the world. However, he has not commented on the missing submersible yet.

Cameron has also directed documentaries about his underwater travels – Expedition Bismarck, Ghosts of the Abyss, and Aliens of the Deep. He had said that he was driven by the desire to see things that human beings have never seen before.

Back in 2009, he had even revealed that the primary reason why he wanted to direct Titanic was so that he could visit the wreckage site. He had told Playboy, “I made Titanic because I wanted to dive to the shipwreck, not because I particularly wanted to make the movie. The Titanic was the Mount Everest of shipwrecks, and as a diver I wanted to do it right. When I learned that some other guys had dived to the Titanic to make an IMAX movie, I said, ‘I’ll make a Hollywood movie to pay for an expedition and do the same thing. I loved that first taste, and I wanted more’.”
