National Nutrition Week – September 1 to September 7

National Nutrition Week is an annual observance that aims to raise awareness about the importance of nutrition and healthy eating habits. It is typically observed in various countries during different periods of the year.

National Nutrition Week in India is celebrated every year in the first week of September. The main aim of observing Nutrition Week in the country is to create awareness among people about the benefits of nutrition and promote healthy and hygienic eating habits.

1942 – The Indian National Army was founded by Rash Behari Bose

The Indian prisoners of war captured by the Japanese in the Malaya and Burma fronts were encouraged to join the Indian Independence League and become the soldiers of the Indian National Army (INA), formed on September

1, 1942, as the military wing of Rash Behari Bose’s Indian National League.

1947 – Indian Standard Time is introduced

On September 1, 1947, the phenomenon of Indian Standard Time (IST) was introduced to the country as its official time. IST is observed throughout the country, with a time offset of UTC + 5.30. IST means that India is five and a half hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. 

India does not follow Daylight Saving Time, like other countries in the world. IST is calculated on the basis of 82.5 degrees East longitude from a clock tower in Mirzapur near Allahabad, as it is near the corresponding longitude reference line.

1956 – India’s largest life insurance company LIC was established

The Life Insurance Corporation of India was established on 1 September 1956, when the Parliament of India passed the Life Insurance of India Act, nationalising the insurance industry in India.

What happened in World History on September 1

 1864 – Atlanta Falls to Union

Gen. William T. Sherman’s troops at Atlanta was repulsed with heavy losses. Hood and Sherman continued to battle for the crucial Confederate city throughout the summer until Hood was finally forced to abandon Atlanta to Union forces on September 1, 1864.

1923 – The Great Japan Earthquake

The first shock hit at 11:58 a.m., emanating from a seismic fault six miles beneath the floor of Sagami Bay, 30 miles south of Tokyo.

The date was September 1, 1923, and the event was the Great Kanto Earthquake, at the time considered the worst natural disaster ever to strike quake-prone Japan. The initial jolt was followed a few minutes later by a 40-foot-high tsunami. A series of towering waves swept away thousands of people. 

1972 – Bobby Fischer becomes the first American to win the World Chess Championship

According to History, On September 1, 1972, in what’s billed as the “Match of the Century,” American chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer defeated Russian Boris Spassky during the World Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland.

1985 – The wreck of the Titanic found

The debris trail led to the wreck. Just after 1:00 a.m. on September 1, 1985, under more than 12,400 feet of water, one of the Titanic’s boilers was identified, confirming the wreck had been found. Video filming from Argo and 35-mm filming from ANGUS were conducted throughout the remaining four days of the voyage. 

2001 – First Muslim holiday U.S. postage stamp is issued

The 34-cent stamp was issued on Sept. 1, 2001, shortly before the attacks of 9/11. It was reissued as a 37-cent stamp in 2002, at which time the Bush White House posted an item promoting the special stamp as one way to reach out to the world Muslim community on Ramadan, FactCheck.org reported. FactCheck.org is a nonpartisan, nonprofit fact-finding project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania.

– In 1939, World War II began as Nazi Germany invaded Poland.

– In 1942, U.S. District Court Judge Martin I. Welsh, ruling from Sacramento, California, on a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of Fred Korematsu, upheld the wartime detention of Japanese-Americans as well as Japanese nationals.

– In 1945, Americans received word of Japan’s formal surrender that ended World War II. (Because of the time difference, it was Sept. 2 in Tokyo Bay, where the ceremony took place.)

– In 1969, a coup in Libya brought Moammar Gadhafi to power.

– In 1983, 269 people were killed when a Korean Air Lines Boeing 747 was shot down by a Soviet jet fighter after the airliner entered Soviet airspace.

– In 2005, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin issued a “desperate SOS” as his city descended into anarchy amid the flooding left by Hurricane Katrina.

– In 2009, Vermont’s law allowing same-sex marriage went into effect.
