World Patient Safety Day – September 17

World Patient Safety Day is observed annually on September 17th. It is a global campaign aimed at raising awareness about patient safety and encouraging actions to improve the safety of healthcare practices. 1948 – The princely state of Hyderabad merged with India

September 17, 1948, is a historic day in India’s journey as an independent nation. On this day, the largest princely state, Hyderabad, was integrated with the Union of India. This year marks the beginning of the 75th year of the merger of Hyderabad which till September 1948 was under the rule of the Asaf Jahi dynasty or the Nizams. The integration was achieved through a military operation – referred to as police action under the code name Operation Polo. It was initiated on September 13 and ended with a ceasefire announced by Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh and the last Nizam of Hyderabad, on September 17.

1982 – The first cricket Test match was played between India and Ceylon

Sri Lanka played their first Test match against India on 17th September 1982. It was an exciting match that ended in a draw after creating possibilities of a win for both sides.

1778 – Treaty of Fort Pitt Signed

On September 17, 1778, they signed a treaty called the Treaty of Fort Pitt, promising a “perpetual peace and friendship” between the two nations.

1787 – U.S. Constitution signed

On September. 17, the nation observes Constitution Day and Citizenship Day as part of Constitution Week (Sept. 17 to 23). The commemoration honors both the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, and an observance that began in 1940 as “I Am an American Day.”

1862 – Battle of Antietam breaks out

On September 17, The Battle of Antietam begins at dawn when Hooker’s Union corps mounts a powerful assault on Lee’s left flank. Repeated Union attacks and equally vicious Confederate counterattacks sweep back and forth across Miller’s cornfield and the West Woods.

1976 – Space Shuttle Enterprise Makes its Public Debut

On September 17, 1976, NASA rolled out its first space shuttle, named Enterprise, from its manufacturing plant in Palmdale, California. The story of Enterprise officially began on Jan. 5, 1972, when President Richard M. Nixon directed NASA to build the partially reusable space transportation system, stating that “it would revolutionize transportation into near space.” NASA Administrator James C. Fletcher hailed the President’s decision as “an historic step in the nation’s space program,” adding that it would change what humans can accomplish in space. Following two years of construction and assembly, gathered dignitaries who hailed the benefits of the new space transportation system witnessed Enterprise’s premiere roll out. The creator and cast members of the TV series Star Trek also attended the event.

1978 – Israel and Egypt reach Camp David Accords

On September 17, 1978, after 12 days of meetings at the U.S. presidential retreat of Camp David, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin (men-AH’-kem BAY’-gihn) and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed a framework for a peace treaty.
