Nelson Mandela Day – July 18
Nelson Mandela Day is celebrated annually on July 18th to honour the life, legacy, and values of Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa and a global symbol of peace, reconciliation, and human rights. 1857 – Establishment of Bombay University
It was established on July 18th, 1857. Madras and Calcutta Universities were established in the same year. The University of Mumbai was established in 1857 consequent to ‘Wood’s Education Dispatch drafted by Charles Wood in 1854. The university was modeled after London University.
1947 – The India Independence Act 1947 Comes into Force
On July 18th, 1947, the India Independence Act 1947 was given royal assent and came into force. The India Independence Act was a United Kingdom act of parliament that separated British India into two new dominions of India and Pakistan. 1968 – Intel is founded
Robert Noyce, Andy Grove and Gordon Moore incorporated Intel, a company they built on the production of the microprocessor. The component that has allowed computers to increase in speed and decrease in size, the microprocessor also built by Intel, whose Pentium processors now power most IBM-compatible personal computers.
Moore is famous for Moore’s Law, which dictates that every 18 months microprocessors double in speed and decrease in size by half.
1986 – Video of Titanic wreckage released
On July 18, 1986, the Titanic video footage was released to the public. The video is the first recording of the ship in a wreck. The video footage is stunning in its clarity and detail, showing one of the ship’s majestic staircases and a coral-lined chandelier slowly swinging on the ocean currents.

– In 2005, an unrepentant Eric Rudolph was sentenced in Birmingham, Alabama, to life in prison for an abortion clinic bombing that killed an off-duty police officer and maimed a nurse.
