World Bamboo Day – September 18

World Bamboo Day is celebrated annually on September 18th to raise awareness about the importance of bamboo and promote its sustainable utilization. International Equal Pay Day – September 18

International Equal Pay Day, celebrated on September 18, represents the longstanding efforts towards the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value. 1803 – The British captured Puri

On September 18, 1803, British East India Company’s Colonel Harcourt took over Puri, one of the four revered Dhams of Hindus. On June 10, 1805, the then collector of Puri, Charles Groeme submitted a report on Shree Jagannath Temple to the East India Company, recommending imposition of Pilgrim Tax on visitors to Puri.

1948 – Operation Polo is terminated

Operation Polo was the name used to refer to the Hyderabad Police Action which was essentially a military operation under which the Indian armed forces encroached on the State of Hyderabad and defeated the Nizam, obtaining the state of Hyderabad for the Indian Union. On September 18, 1948, Operation Polo was terminated after the Indian Army accepted the surrender of the Nizam of Hyderabad’s army.

1998 – ICANN is founded

ICANN, in full Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, nonprofit private organization incorporated in California on September 18, 1998, and tasked with taking over from the U.S. government various administrative duties associated with running the Internet.

2016 – Uri Attack

On this day, the Indian Army suffered its biggest loss in the past two decades in Jammu and Kashmir. In the early hours of September 18, 2016, four heavily armed terrorists crossed the Line of Control (LoC), trekked for about six kilometres, breached a heavily guarded military camp in the Uri town of Jammu and Kashmir and launched a massive grenade attack.

The target — a temporary fuel depot housing hundreds of litres of petrol, diesel and kerosene — was carefully chosen for its inflammatory potential. Adjacent to the fuel depot were canvas tents where soldiers of the 5 Bihar were sleeping.

2019 – The Indian government proposes a ban on e-cigarettes

The Union Cabinet has decided to ban Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), popularly referred to as electronic cigarettes — or e-cigarettes — in India.

1851 – First Publication of The New York Daily Times 

The New York Times (NYT) is an American daily newspaper, founded and continuously published in New York City since September 18, 1851.

1934 – USSR joins the League of Nations

September 18, 1934 general meeting of the League of Nations adopted a resolution on the admission of the USSR into the League and the inclusion of its representative to its Board as a permanent member.

1947 – USA Air Force Birthday

The official Air Force Birthday is recognised as Sept. 18, 1947, the date of the passage of the National Security Act of 1947. 1959 – Vanguard 3 is launched into Earth’s orbit

Vanguard 3 was launched on September 18, 1959, at 05:20:07 UT from Cape Canaveral and was injected at 05:29:49 into a 33.35-degree inclination Earth orbit with a perigee altitude of 512 km, apogee of 3750 km, and an orbital period of 130 minutes.

1965 – Comet Ikeya-Seki Discovered

Comet Ikeya-Seki, officially known as C/1965 S1, was a spectacular and famous comet that was discovered by two Japanese astronomers, Kaoru Ikeya and Tsutomu Seki, on September 18, 1965. This comet is often referred to by their names in recognition of their discovery.
