1821 – Peru declares independence

The Peruvian War of Independence against Spain began in 1811 and ended with a declaration of independence under the leadership of José de San Martín.

1851 – The first photograph of a total solar eclipse was made

On 28 July 1851, the first photograph of a total solar eclipse was made. The photograph was a daguerrotype, had a 24-second exposure and was taken by Herr Berkowski from Königsberg, Germany. At the next opportunity, at the 1860 eclipse, photographs obtained by W.

1868 – The Fourteenth Amendment. 

On July 28, 1868, Secretary of State William Seward issued a proclamation certifying without reservation that the Fourteenth Amendment was a part of the United States Constitution. The required number of states had ratified the Fourteenth Amendment a few weeks earlier on July 9, 1868.

1914- Beginning of World War I

World War I, also known as the Great War, was a global conflict that began on July 28, 1914. The war started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife, Sophie, in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914. The assassination was carried out by a Bosnian Serb nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, and it set off a chain of events that led to the outbreak of the war.

1932 – Bonus Marchers evicted by U.S. Army

On July 28, 1932, the U.S. government attacked World War I veterans with tanks, bayonets, and tear gas, under the leadership of textbook heroes Douglas MacArthur, George Patton, and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

1976 – The Great Tangshan Earthquake

In the 20th century, more than 800 earthquakes of more than magnitude 6.0 happened in China. Coincidentally, the deadliest earthquake of the 20th century happened at 3:42 AM on July 28, 1976, striking the Chinese industrial city of Tangshan in the People’s Republic of China. The catastrophic earthquake, measuring between 7.8 and 8.2 magnitude on the Richter scale, obliterated the city of Tangshan and killed an estimated 240,000 people in the city and surrounding areas.

– In 1984, the Los Angeles Summer Olympics opened.

– In 2012, Syria’s government launched an offensive to retake rebel-held neighborhoods in the nation’s commercial hub of Aleppo.

– In 2012, At the London Olympics, Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen set the first world record, winning the women’s 400-meter individual medley in 4:28.43. Ryan Lochte of the U.S. won the men’s 400-meter individual medley in 4:05.18.
