1947 – First televised presidential speech in the United States

1962 – James Bond makes his theatrical debut

On October 5, 1962, the movie “Dr. No” premiered in London. It was the first in a long and successful series based on the spy novels by author Ian Fleming. Playing the leading role, Agent 007, was an unknown actor: Sean Connery.

1984 – First Canadian to go into space

Marc Garneau was the first Canadian in space, one of the few chosen from among 4,300 who answered a newspaper ad in the summer of 1984. The Quebec naval officer’s 8-year-old twins at the time thought he was going to Disney World.

– In 1958, racially-desegregated Clinton High School in Clinton, Tennessee, was nearly leveled by an early morning bombing.
