Bengaluru Man Who Sold Coconut Water To Bill Gates Shares His One Big Regret

A coconut vendor in Bengaluru had his dream come true earlier this year when he met Bill Gates, one of the richest people in the world.

Hari Babu, a 40-year-old tender coconut seller, had read about Gates in newspapers years ago as a person of immense wealth in the software industry. Of course, he had little idea then that destiny would lead him to cross paths with this influential figure, let alone share a pleasant interaction and even sell him a tender coconut.

Hari Babu, who has been selling coconuts near Bengaluru’s Ulsoor Lake in Byappanahalli for the last 22 years, recently narrated his remarkable story of meeting Bill Gates, as per a TOI report. Earlier in March this year, Bill Gates came to India on a visit to an awareness camp organised by the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB).

On that day, Hari noticed an unusual commotion near his spot. Out of curiosity, he inquired, and soon he discovered the reason behind the commotion. One of the world’s richest people, Bill Gates, was in the vicinity! Filled with excitement, Hari immediately wheeled his cart towards the camp where Bill Gates was present. Amid the crowd, he stood, hoping for a glimpse of the billionaire.

The Only Regret He Has

Reflecting on the experience, Hari told TOI, “I never thought such a day would come. A person of such high status, someone who likely has little time for casual interactions, came to my humble stall for a refreshment. It felt like a dream come true, and for that moment, I felt that everything I had done in life had a purpose.”

His only regret is not being able to capture a photograph with Bill Gatesdespite meeting him.

Bill Gates, inquisitive about the functioning of the postal department’s payment system during his visit, decided to conduct a test purchase from a nearby coconut vendor, Hari. Although they didn’t engage in a conversation, when Gates expressed his gratitude with a “Thank you,” Hari could only respond with an excited “You are welcome!”, as per the report. Bill Gates’ companions paid Rs. 50 for the coconut. After this brief encounter, Hari couldn’t wait to share the extraordinary incident with all his friends, brimming with joy.
