How man got to New York without passport

Craig Sturt was arrested at 8 am on Monday in Richmond, south-west London, according to the Metropolitan Police. The 46-year-old from Slough, Berkshire, is accused of slipping through security checks without showing any documents before boarding a British Airways flight from Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5 to John F Kennedy Airport on December 23 last year without a passport or boarding pass.

He was initially apprehended on Christmas Day upon returning to London from New York, Sturt faced charges including obtaining services by deception, being unlawfully airside, and boarding an aircraft without permission.

Despite pleading guilty at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court, he failed to appear for sentencing on January 22. Sturt now remains in custody following his recent arrest.

British Airways stated, “We are assisting the authorities with their investigation,” while a Heathrow Airport spokesperson affirmed, “All people who go airside are subject to security screening, including the individual involved in this case. We are supporting the authorities with their ongoing investigation.”

What is airside?

The airside of an airport encompasses the area between the boarding gates and the airspace. It includes crucial elements such as runways, taxiways, and navigational systems. This section of the airport is vital for the movement and operation of aircraft, facilitating their safe arrival, departure, and taxiing on the ground.

Access to the airside is typically restricted to authorized personnel, including airline crew, ground staff, and security personnel, to ensure the security and efficiency of flight operations.
