Tur, Urad Dal's Stock Limit Slashed For Wholesalers: Check Out State-Level Prices Of The Pulses

As prices of two pulses – urad dal and tur dal – continue to rise, the government has reduced the limit on stocks held by wholesalers and large retail chains to prevent hoarding and ensure continuous release of pulses in the market.

The stock limit for tur and urad dal held by wholesalers and large retailers has been reduced from 200 tonnes to 50 tonnes. Importers have also been barred from holding stocks for more than 30 days from the time shipments are cleared by customs.

The validity of this order has been extended by 3 months, while initially it was to apply till October.

Why have prices of urad dal and tur dal been increasing?

In the last month, the average retail price of tur has increased by Rs 10 a kg to touch Rs 149 a kg, while the price of urad dal has risen by Rs 2 to Rs 118 a kg.

The reasons for the price rise are:

Unseasonal rains last year in October in the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka resulted in a fall in tur dal production. Delay in sowing of the kharif crop has also led to lesser production. Reduced imports have hampered supply, too. TOI quotes an officer saying, “… imports are not coming the way the government had expected because of issues in certain countries, resulting in less supply.”

When have stock limits for the two pulses been applied?

On June 2, the Central government had decided to impose stock limits on tur and urad till October 31 due to a hike in prices of these pulses.

The government has now increased the order for 3 months until December 31.
