From 1960 To 2016, India Had 12 Paralympic Medals And Now It Has Won 19 In One Edition

Before the Tokyo Paralympics began, India had won 12 medals overall between 1960 and 2016. By the time this edition ended our tally was 31. This means in the span of a couple of weeks we won 19 medals, more than our combined tally of the previous editions.

19 is by far our best haul at the Paralympics. 5 gold medals were the highlight of India’s performance.

Be it fresh stars or experienced campaigners, Indian para-athletes put their best foot forward as we finished 24th. This was the first time since 1972 that India finished in the top 25.

This is good news for para-athletics in our country as India is improving leaps and bounds in multiple fields. The best thing was that all medals were distributed in multiple disciplines.

It does bode well for the future. Tokyo is done and dusted, now it’s mission 2024.
