Mary Kom Turns Back The Clock To Book Tokyo Olympics Birth, 7 Other Indian Boxers Also Qualify

Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom showed her class as she booked a berth at Tokyo Olympics 2020 after reaching the semi-final at Asian/Oceanian Olympic qualifiers.

Mary Kom defeated Philippines boxer Irish Magno 5-0 (unanimous verdict) in the quarter-final of the 51kg category in Amman, Jordan, to book her place in the semi-final of the Olympic qualifiers.  

The 37 year-old, who won a bronze at the London Olympics, will make a return to the Games in Tokyo. It will be only her 2nd appearance at the quadrennial global spectacle.

Mary Kom had clinched a dominant 5-0 victory over Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Tasmyn Benny of New Zealand in the 1st round of the Olympic qualifiers. Now after booking her spot, Mary Kom will be looking to better her heroics of 2012 when she won a bronze at London Olympics. 

Meanwhile, World number one Amit Panghal (52kg) qualified for his maiden Olympic Games by entering the semi-final at Asia/Oceania Qualifiers on Monday. World silver-medallist and top seed Panghal edged out familiar foe Carlo Paalam of Philippines in a 4-1 split verdict in the quarter-final.

The other Indian boxers who have sealed an Olympic quota so far are Asian Championships gold medallist Pooja Rani (75kg), two-time World Championships bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Vikas Krishan (69kg), Ashish Kumar (75kg), Simranjit Kaur (60 kg) and Satish Kumar (+91kg).
