World's Largest Carbon Capturing Plant In Iceland Will Reduce CO2 Levels By .0001%

World’s largest direct air carbon capture facility could reduce carbon dioxide by about .0001%. Sounds like a bleak number, doesn’t it? Even then, it could begin a new era for global facilities that focus on capturing carbon.

The construction for this facility has begun construction in Iceland and is run by a Swiss startup called Climeworks AG. The name of this carbon capturing facility is “Mammoth,” for it would be able to capture 36,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the air every year.

Even then, this makes up about .0001% of the 36 billion tons of CO2 that is produced by humanity every year.

What is carbon capture?

It’s a a concept that states carbon can be sucked out of the air through chemical processes and industrial mechanisms. For instance, the upcoming plant in Iceland will use geothermal power in order to suck the carbon from air. Later, this carbon will be mixed with water and then “injected” into the ground, where it’ll react with basalt to form solid carbonate rock, Electrek reported.

Some critics are wary of carbon capturing, saying that it is not the fix-it-all we think it is, and that more radical changes like abandoning fossil fuels for good are required to stop the climate crisis. In addition, the current tech comes with a hefty price tag, not making it a feasible way to remove carbon.

And of course, the time for action is now. Any delay is brings humanity closer to ruin from climate changes. But if humanity were to install a million of similarly sized plants, we might become a carbon neutral planet. About half a trillion tons of carbon needs to be removed from the atmosphere for Earth to reach pre-industrial era carbon levels.
