Goa Statehood Day – May 30

Goa Statehood Day is celebrated on May 30th every year to commemorate the day when Goa officially became the 25th state of the Indian Union. On May 30, 1987, Goa was granted statehood, ending its status as a Union Territory.

1987 – Goa became the 25th full state in the country in 1987.

Before 1987, Goa was a Union Territory administered by the central government of India. The movement for statehood gained momentum in the late 1970s, with demands for greater political representation and autonomy for Goa. After years of protests and negotiations, the Government of India finally granted statehood to Goa on May 30, 1987.

In the year 1967, there was a referendum and the people of Goa chose to remain as a union territory. Later on May 30, 1987, Goa was given full statehood and thus Goa became the 25th state of the Republic of India.

2012 – Viswanathan Anand wins the World Chess Championship title for the fifth time

1889 – The brassiere is invented

The brassiere, commonly known as a bra, is a garment designed to support and cover the breasts. While there were various early forms of breast support used throughout history, the invention of the modern Bra is attributed to Mary Phelps Jacob.

On May 30, 1889, Mary Phelps Jacob, a socialite from New York City, was granted a patent for her invention of the “backless brassiere.” Dissatisfied with the discomfort and restrictive nature of corsets, she designed a more practical and comfortable undergarment using two silk handkerchiefs, ribbons, and cord.

1967 – The Republic of Biafra proclaimed

In 1960, Nigeria gained independence from Britain. Six years later, the Muslim Hausas in northern Nigeria began massacring the Christian Igbos in the region, prompting tens of thousands of Igbos to flee to the east, where their people were the dominant ethnic group. The Igbos doubted that Nigeria’s oppressive military government would allow them to develop, or even survive, so on May 30, 1967, Lieutenant Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu and other non-Igbo representatives of the area established the Republic of Biafra, comprising several states of Nigeria.

1971 – NASA launches Mariner 9, the first satellite to orbit Mars

Mariner 9 was a NASA spacecraft that was successfully launched on May 30, 1971, becoming the first satellite to orbit Mars. It was part of the Mariner program, a series of robotic interplanetary missions conducted by NASA in the 1960s and 1970s.
