1861 – Rabindranath Tagore was born

Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti, also known as Rabindra Jayanti, is an annual celebration held on May 9th to commemorate the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, one of the most famous poets, writers, and philosophers of India.

It is observed on May 7 in other states, according to the Gregorian calendar. However, according to Drikpanchang, it was observed on May 9 in Bengal. He was born in Kolkata on May 7, 1861. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his collection of poems, Gitanjali.

On 7 May 1907, the tram car started its first journey outside the municipal office, went to Crawford Market, and returned to the point it had started from. A Skoda electric trolley-bus of BEST.

The service was inaugurated on 7 May 1907 by civic chairman Vallabhdas Thakersey. At 5.30 pm, the first electric tram-car, specially decorated, started from outside the Municipal Office, went as far as the Crawford Market, and returned. The service started on a regular basis from the next day. It drew praise for its speed, comfort and low fares.

The route was from Colaba to Bori Bunder. Later, the tram network extended up to Grant Road. However, they were not allowed to ply in rich localities like Malabar Hill and Cumbala Hill lest the rich there were disturbed.

On This Day: The foundation stone was laid of Itanagar, the new capital of Arunachal Pradesh.

The foundation stone of the permanent capital at Itanagar was laid down by the then-governor of Assam, Shri B. K Nehru on 7th may, 1973 at the initiative of K. AAA Raja, and approval of the Pradesh council held in February 1972 at Shillong.

In 1895 Alexander Popov demonstrates the world’s first radio receiver

In Saint Petersburg, Russian physicist Alexander Stepanovich Popov demonstrated the Popov lightning detector, a primitive radio receiver, to the Russian Physical and Chemical Society on May 7, 1895 (see 1989 USSR stamp depicting the demonstration at right).

In 1928, the minimum voting age for British women was lowered from 30 to 21 — the same age as men.

In 1946 Sony is founded 

 In 1946, it was a radio repair shop in a bombed-out department store. Originally known as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo KK (the Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation), the company was founded by physicists Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. On 7 May 1946, they founded a company called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, the company produced Japan’s first tape recorder, called the Type-G.

2000 Vladimir Putin becomes President of Russia

The First Inauguration of Vladimir Putin as the President of Russia took place on Sunday, May 7, 2000. The ceremony was held for the first time in the Grand Kremlin Palace and lasted exactly one hour.

On May 7, 1832: The Treaty of London established the state of Greece. The Treaty of London, signed by Britain, France and Russia, established a new Greek state, appointing Otto of Bavaria the King of Greece, defining Greece as an independent kingdom.
