Andhra Pradesh’s snail curry is gaining popularity

In the Andhra Pradesh districts along the Godavari River, the non-vegetarian foodies favour dishes with spicy ingredients made of snails. Some people have turned into snail traders and are now harvesting snails from the Godavari River’s canals in order to appease their palates.

On the roadside of the canal, they are also involved in the processing of snail meat.

They use a sharp object to separate the snail from its protective shell before displaying it on a plastic sheet so that drivers passing by can negotiate a good price to buy it.

Locals claim this curry can cure chronic diseases

According to these non-vegetarian foodies, this particular food can treat chronic illnesses like bronchitis, asthma, fatigue, and weariness. These people assert that, despite the somewhat difficult and drawn-out preparation process, snail curry tastes better than goat meat.

One must wash the snails with salt and turmeric powder after purchasing them without shells. Later, to get rid of the snails’ foul odour and gum, one can wash them in buttermilk.

Then, boil them in hot water. After the snails are boiled, a flavorful curry with health advantages is created by adding hot ingredients. Additionally, according to foodies, cooking snails in a curry with peanuts is a treat for the palate.

Pila globosa is a species of freshwater snail that is found in many water bodies in India and other parts of Asia. Foodies are currently perusing the River Godavari’s canals to sample the snails, which have been sold for as little as Rs 100 to Rs 200 per Kg.

Not all snails are safe or suitable for human consumption. Some species of snails can be toxic or carry parasites that are harmful to humans. It is important to properly identify the snail species and ensure that it is safe to eat before consuming it.

In general, only certain species of land snails and freshwater snails are considered edible, and they must be properly prepared to remove any potential toxins or parasites. It is always recommended to purchase snails from a reputable source and to cook them thoroughly before consumption.
