In The Aftermath Of Glacier Burst In Uttarakhand, 28 People Have Died And 170 Are Still Missing

The glacier burst in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district wreaked havoc, with more than 150 people feared dead. About 170 workers working on a hydroelectric project are still missing, while the death toll has risen to 28. Indian Army, ITBP and other rescue teams are engaged in relief and rescue work. There had yet been no voice contact with anyone in the tunnel. Heavy equipment was used and a canine squad came to the site to locate the survivors. On Sunday, 12 people were rescued from another much smaller tunnel.

It was not immediately clear what caused the glacier to burst on a sunny Sunday morning. Experts said it had snowed heavily in the Nanda Devi region last week and that it was possible that some of the snow had started to melt and may have led to an avalanche.
