Frozen Visuals From All Over Kashmir Take Over The Internet
People shared images of the iconic Dal Lake freezing over in the city’s cold weather. In a picture posted by Twitter user Shah Junaid, a man is seen breaking layers of ice on the surface of the lake in order to move his shikara boat. The caption of the post read, “A boatman breaks a layer of ice over the surface of Dal Lake on a cold winter morning, in Srinagar, Thursday, Jan. 05, 2023. The city recorded minus 6.4 degrees Celsius the second-lowest winter temperature in the last five years.”
Another video that surprised the internet was a clip that showed the state’s pipelines. While the Dal Lake has given into the harsh winter facing Kashmir, small pipes are also bearing the brunt. In the video, the water in the pipe was more ice than water as a person broke big chunks of ice blocks to get the water moving.

The coldest period in Kashmir is known as the “Chilla-i-Kalan”. This is when the temperature is expected to go below zero, preparing locals for a harsh month or two. These temperatures might sound absurd for those in Delhi who have been cribbing about the cold winters of the capital city. The cold bothered many in the city so much that memes about the winters in Delhi are going viral on the internet everywhere.
People online were quick to comment on the bizarre scenes coming out of the state. A user thought up clever ideas to reuse the ice coming out of the pipes, “We should connect these pipes to nearest bars/pubs so that ICE CUBES can be reutilized for better reason than throwing it in open…” While others simply exclaimed at the sight.
Now with Kashmir bracing for a tough winter, people are eagerly waiting for summer to bring back some comfort and warmth with it.
