Underwater Living Challenge: Man To Spend 100 Days Below The Surface For Science

A man has decided to spend 100 days underwater to see how it affects his body.
Joe Dituri, a professor at the University of South Florida, began the unusual experiment on March 1. Here’s his story.

Man decides to live underwater for 100 days

Dituri, also known as Dr Deep Sea, decided to make the sea his ‘habitat’ for three months in order to conduct a first-of-its-kind biology study.

Dituri is conducting an experiment to look for “new ways to revive marine environments,” according to a statement from the university.
Dituri, who has a PhD in biomedical engineering, will test medical technology that might be used to stop a variety of human diseases.

“But there’s one catch: he’s doing it all 30 feet underwater — and he’s trying to do it for 100 days,” the release said.

The retired US Navy Commander turned professor will live in isolation for the ‘Neptune 100’ experiment.

Dituri will break the world record for “the longest time living underwater”

According to a press release, a psychologist and a psychiatrist will monitor the effects he experiences while in an environment similar to extended space travel. It’s a confined, isolating extreme environment. And as humans, we really need to figure out how we’re going to live in that (environment) if we’re going to expand our planet, go interplanetary, and find all of the cures that we need to find.

Dituri will break the world record for “the longest time living underwater in ambient pressure, 1.6 times the pressure felt on land” if the mission is successful.
Dr. Deep Sea stated in another statement from the University of South Florida, “Because the human body has never been submerged for that long, I will be closely monitored.

This study will look at how this journey affects my body in every way, but my null hypothesis is that the increased pressure will improve my health.”
“So, we suspect I’ll come out superhuman!” he added.
