To surprise his wife, Jason Scott, an Army veteran, bought a used 2021 Maserati SUV. He quickly discovered, though, that the car had been misrepresented on a website for used cars back in November.
He bought the vehicle from Caravan, a business in North Carolina. “Waiting for it outside, it was exciting to see it coming down the hill, everything was fine,” he said.
When he brought the stylish car in for a routine maintenance check at a nearby Maserati dealership in February, reality hit him like a tonne of bricks. The staff at the service informed him and his wife that their car had been stolen.
When the mechanics checked the vehicle’s identification number, they discovered that the vehicle was actually a 2017 Maserati and not a 2021 Maserati. When some employees discovered certain parts didn’t add up to where the car was supposed to be from, doubts began to arise.
When the technicians checked the VIN number on the chassis, according to Jason, they realised the car was stolen.

Naturally, Jason was unable to carry his car keys around anymore. Shortly after the mechanics at the service centre learned that the car was stolen, police reportedly impounded and seized it.
He is now suing the used-goods website for $1 million in damages for losses to his finances and reputation. However, the business has denied having any knowledge of the car’s theft.
According to reports, Carvana claimed in a letter to Jason’s lawyer that they were unaware that the car had been stolen as well. According to reports, they are currently working with Jason to refund the cash he used to buy the car.
According to ABC News, the Attorney General’s Office of North Carolina is looking into Carvana regarding 130 complaints.
