According to the Liverpool Echo, 32-year-old Etmond Lika appeared via video link at Liverpool Crown Court after pleading guilty to one count of being involved in the production of cannabis.

According to the prosecutor, Christopher Hopkins, the man’s home on Stanley Road in Kirkdale had its front door changed by a locksmith.

Later that day, when the police showed up at Lika’s house, they found a growing setup with at least 200 cannabis plants.

It was “plainly a sophisticated operation,” Hopkins observed.

Prosecutors assert that Lika tried to escape after police started searching the house by climbing through a skylight and hiding on the roof.

The man landed in prison at the end

Police spoke with the 32-year-old, who initially denied knowing anything about the marijuana farm.

He also claimed to have crossed the English Channel by boat in September, according to the authorities.

The trip was reportedly paid for by Lika with €5,000 (roughly Rs 4.45 lakhs), but the prosecution insisted that “the Crown frankly knows nothing else about this defendant.”

“Lika had been employed by somebody to manage or run this installation, whether that was tending to the plants or whatever else was required,” Hopskins said, as per the outlet.

He added, “Lika must have been motivated by some significant financial advantage and must have understood what was going on in the house.”

Olivia Beesley, Lika’s defence solicitor, claimed that the 32-year-old immigrated from Albania and moved to the UK for financial reasons after being offered low rent to live in the Kirkdale property. Lika had no prior convictions in his native country, she added.

Judge Brian Cummings KC, however, expressed doubt about Lika’s relocation and background after becoming suspicious of him due to his birthday.

Numerous people in this class of cases have birthdays on January 1st, he noted. “You illegally entered this country, and we know very little about you. Regarding your police interview, I take note of what was stated in the case summary, and I quote: ‘It was difficult to get an answer out of him; he continuously changed his account throughout the interview.’ When someone celebrates a birthday on January 1st, a question mark always arises in my mind, as it seems to be more frequently than is statistically probable in cases of this class.”

In the end, the man received a prison term of two years and four months.
