TOI

Bhagat Singh loved reading books – he was seen carrying a load of books while he was in prison and even otherwise. He was an avid reader, some of his favourite authors were Lenin, Charles Dickens and Maxim Gorky. It is said that he was inspired by the Bolshevik Revolution. A lesser known fact is that while he was in prison he wrote a letter to Jaidev – who was his childhood friend – and asked him to provide him with some books. The books were The Soviets At Work, Materialism by Karl Liebknecht, Left Wing Communism, Land Revolution in Russia, and more.

Bhagat Singh and two other bravehearts, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar, were hanged on March 23, 1931 today. It is said that the three had an ideology that was dissimilar to what Mahatma Gandhi had in mind. However, all of them wanted to achieve the same thing – Indian independence from the British rule.

On this occasion, we share some inspirational quotes written by Shaheed Bhagat Singh:

“Life is live its own.. others help is needed in funerals only”

“It is beyond the power of any man to make a revolution. Neither can it be brought about on any appointed date. It is brought about by special environments, social and economic. The function of an organised party is to utilise any such opportunity offered by these circumstances.”

“But man’s duty is to try and endeavour, success depends upon chance and environments.”

“Merciless criticism and independent thinking are the two necessary traits of revolutionary thinking.”

“Love always elevates the character of man. It never lowers him, provided love be love.”

“I am a man and all that affects mankind concerns me.”

“Non-violence is backed by the theory of soul-force in which suffering is courted in the hope of ultimately winning over the opponent. But what happens when such an attempt fails to achieve the object? It is here that soul-force has to be combined with physical force so as not to remain at the mercy of a tyrannical and ruthless enemy.”

“Every tiny molecule of Ash is in motion with my heat. I am such a Lunatic that I am free even in Jail.”

“Philosophy is the outcome of human weakness or limitation of knowledge”

“The romance of militancy dominated our predecessors; now serious ideas ousted this way of thinking. No more mysticism! No more blind faith! Now realism was our mode of thinking. At times of terrible necessity, we can resort to extreme methods, but violence produces opposite results in mass movements.”
