Even though there are laws banning dowry, the evil practice is still very much prevalent in the country. To make people understand the demerits of this regressive tradition, education is the only way – or so we think?
An image from a book has gone viral that apparently states the merits of this evil practice. The page is apparently from a college textbook. Many social media users said is from Textbook of Sociology for Nurses by T K Indrani, has a section under the subhead, “Merits of Dowry“.
The book is reading material for nursing students.
Some of the things that were listed in the passage read that “dowry is helpful in establishing new household” with furniture, appliances such as refrigerators and vehicles. It also listed that girls get a share of parental property in dowry. A third point stated that “an indirect advantage” of the dowry system is that parents have now started educating their girls so that they have to give less dowry. Moreover, lastly, it said that the dowry system can help marry off ‘ugly girls.’
After the tweet went viral, Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, tagged Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and asked him to remove such books from circulation.
It also received a lot of criticism on the internet, with many calling it shameful. Many are appalled by the fact that such misogynist and regressive content is being taught to students.
