Couple Celebrated Valentine’s Day By Setting A World Record For The Longest Underwater Kiss

Divers Beth Neale of South Africa and Miles Cloutier of Canada live in South Africa with their daughter. The couple set the Guinness World Record at a Maldives hotel.

According to a press release from Guinness World Records, the couple broke the previous record of 3 minutes and 24 seconds, which was set 13 years ago on Guinness World Records’ Italian TV show, Lo Show dei Record. Guinness World Records’ official Twitter account posted a video of the event.

The caption of the video reads, “These lovebirds set a new underwater kiss record since their joint love was the ocean.”

The couple began their attempt at 7.30 a.m., doing some warm-up breath holds and two trial underwater kisses of two and three minutes before deciding to break the record. Despite all of their practise since first coming up with the idea three years ago, underwater filmmakers Beth and Miles admit the whole thing was much more difficult than they expected.

“Three days before the record, I could just not hold my breath,” Beth, a four-time South African Freedive Champion, told GWR. “We couldn’t even break the existing record – we weren’t even close,” Miles added.

The couple admitted it was a hard stunt even after being professionals

Despite being professionals, the couple admitted that the stunt was difficult for them. As carbon dioxide accumulated inside Beth and Miles’ bodies, they had to resist the urge to swim to the surface and take a deep breath, according to the GWR.

However, they went against their instincts by looking to each other for support during their record-breaking attempt. Miles called their record-breaking feat “the hero’s journey of a breath hold,” admitting that he struggled from the start. After all, love triumphed, and they broke the record with flying colours.

Sidey the Shark, one of the Maldives’ top underwater videographers, captured the couple’s underwater kiss. A large crowd gathered to watch their record attempt.

As per the couple, Neale and Cloutier have a one and a-half-year-old daughter named Neve. They are both divers from South Africa. They first met in Bermuda five years ago, when Neale was teaching a programme called “Kids on the Reef,” which taught children how to free dive.

Cloutier volunteered to help her with the programme, and the two quickly fell in love. The couple teaches free diving and shares their adventures on their Instagram account, @freedivingcouple.
