The US Department of Justice stated that a YouTuber accused of deliberately crashing his plane to increase views on his social media account has agreed to plead guilty to impeding a federal investigation.
Trevor Jacob has consented to plead guilty to one count of destruction and concealment with the purpose of hindering a federal inquiry, according to The Guardian. The offence carries a maximum punishment of 20 years in federal prison under federal law.
Jacob took a solo flight from a Santa Barbara, California, airport in November 2021 with cameras attached to his plane. Along with the cameras, Jacob brought a parachute and a selfie stick.

The video was shared one year ago on Jacob’s YouTube channel with the caption, “I Crashed My Airplane.” Jacob can be seen parachuting out of a single-engine plane that he claims malfunctioned, holding a selfie stick.
Cameras installed throughout the aircraft capture the aircraft’s out-of-control descent into the forest and final crash landing.

After seeing the video, aviation aficionados first questioned whether the crash was a genuine accident. However, the New York Times later stated that the FAA concurred that Jacob’s use of a parachute was unusual in the first place.
