IPL 2024: MS Dhoni Quits As Chennai Super Kings Captain, Succeeded By Ruturaj Gaikwad

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made a significant leadership change as Ruturaj Gaikwad steps into the role of captaincy, succeeding the iconic Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has decided to pass on the mantle after a highly successful tenure.

“MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period,” CSK said in a statement on their website.

“The team looks forward to the upcoming season,” the statement added.

Dhoni’s decision comes a day ahead of the high-stakes opening match of IPL 2024 between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Under Dhoni’s captaincy, CSK clinched an impressive five IPL titles, solidifying their position as one of the most dominant franchises in the league.

“Presenting @ChennaiIPL’s Captain – @Ruutu1331,” the IPL posted on X shortly after releasing a picture of all captains posing with the IPL trophy.

Born in 1997, Ruturaj made his debut in the IPL format in 2020, and quickly made a strong impression.

Gaikwad, who was retained by CSK in the 2022 edition for Rs 6 crore, has showcased remarkable talent since his IPL debut, boasting an average of 39.07 and a strike rate of 135.52.

With 52 matches under his belt since joining Chennai Super Kings in 2019, Gaikwad has proven himself as an integral part of the team’s lineup, making him a natural choice for captaincy.

Gaikwad’s appointment marks a significant milestone in his career as he gears up to lead the Super Kings in the TATA IPL 2024. The Pune-based youngster also participated in the pre-captains photoshoot, where he met with other team skippers.

As Dhoni approaches his 43rd birthday in July, speculations abound regarding whether this IPL season could potentially be his last as a player.
