French Minister Demands A Probe By FIFA After Players Are Targeted By Insults

The taunting of Kylian Mbappe by a few Argentina fans while celebrating in Buenos Aires to welcome back the World Cup winners should be investigated by FIFA, a senior French cabinet minister said, as per Reuters,

Fans set alight a makeshift coffin lid with a photo of Mbappe while Emiliano Martinez held a toy baby with Mbappe’s face.

The FFF along with an anti-racism charity is set to file legal complaints against those who racially insulted Mbappe and his teammates online after losing the final on penalties.

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire told Sud Radio the scenes were “undignified” and wanted to know if FIFA should look into it.

“What is FIFA doing? Sport is about fair play,” he said said.

“It’s showing respect for others. It’s showing respect for those who lost,” he added.

The Argentine Embassy has not commented.

Mbappe scored 3 times in the final but could not win it.

He and other players of African descent, who form a large part of the side, have been the targets of a barrage of racist abuse from some supporters on the internet.

“It is the expression of a far-right ideology that says that these people should not be considered French,” said Hermann Ebongue, secretary general of SOS Racisme.
