Dinesh Karthik's Story Is A Journey Of A Teen Sensation Who Ended Up Staying In Dhoni's Shadow

On September 5, 2004, Dinesh Karthik made his ODI debut for India. With the bat he made just 1, but pulled off one of the best stumpings of all time to make a case to be in the side.

The man was just 19, full of life and a new sensation in the side. All set for a glittering career.

Both made their debut in 2004.

But 2004 saw another man also make his debut. MS Dhoni at 23 was a little older than Karthik, but was already making waves at domestic level. Both were keepers and already competing with a certain Parthiv Patel for a place in the side.

Karthik was tried as a Test opener, and the man did produce some fluent knocks. Playing as a specialist batsman, he made sporadic appearances between 2007 and 2010. Meanwhile Dhoni was leading the side and also our premier keeper.

The man however did not lose heart. He took his time, did well at domestic level, killed it in the IPL and slowly started coming back towards the national side. Last year he had a decent outing in ODIs whenever Dhoni was rested or played purely as a batsman. Make no mistake, Dhoni deserves every inch of the success he’s got, but Karthik for good measure, at times has been harshly dealt with.

The knock against Bangladesh in the T210 tri-series final only reaffirms why he deserves to be in the team. At 32, not many years are ahead of him in the game, but he is more than an effective finisher in the limited overs versions.

The 2019 World Cup is a little over a year away. Karthik faces a race against time. For most of his career he has been under Dhoni’s shadow and maybe now it’s time for him to step out.

After all, it’s better late than never.
