Joydeep Karmakar to get special promotion

KOLKATA: Indian shooter Joydeep Karmakar will be accorded a special promotion by South Eastern Railway (SER) for his splendid performance in the London Olympic Games where he missed the bronze by a whisker after finishing fourth in the final of 50m Rifle Prone event.

Karmakar, now working as a senior clerk in SER, said the experience in London would definitely help him to do better at the next Olympic Games at Rio in Brazil in 2016 and at the next Asian Games in North Korea.Karmakar, who annexed a silver medal in the Sydney World Cup with a score of 599 out of 600 to set up a new national and Asian record in 2010, said he would be starting his preparation from next month for the National Shooting Championship in December this year and then for the World Grand Prix in Kuwait in March next year.On the occasion, a nostalgic Karmakar remembered his first joining the SER family 14 years back and thanked the organisation for nurturing his talent all through.On the sidelines of the felicitation, Karmakar also urged other sports persons, who joined the organisation for excellence in sports and games, not to be complacent after getting a job but continue till they achieve their dream.Earlier, South Eastern Railway General Manager A K Verma, on behalf of SER, presented Karmakar a cheque of Rs 2 lakh, a shawl, couple of mementos and assured him of all help in his preparations for the other big events.The South-Eastern Railway Sports Association also presented him another Rs 25,000 for his feat in London Games.PTI
