Paes-Vardhan through to second round

LONDON: Leander Paes and his unheralded partner Vishnu Vardhan got the better of Jean Julien Rojer and Robin Haase of The Netherlands 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-2 to advance to the second round of the men’s doubles event of the Olympic Games on Monday.


Paes and Vardhan, ranked 208 in the world, struggled to win the first set and lost their rhythm to concede the second set.But they bounced back brilliantly in decider to clinch the issue and keep their hopes alive in the competition.Paes and Vishnu managed to overhaul their Dutch rivals after a gruelling three-set battle.The Dutch pair send down eight aces compared to the three by the Indian pair but they also double faulted thrice.The Indian pair had a better break point conversation rate as they converted three of the six opportunities that came their way.In comparison, the Dutch combo could make count only two of the six chances they got.Paes and Vardhan will be facing a stiff challenge as they will take on second seeded French pair of Joe-Wilfred Tsonga and Michael Llodra.PTI
